How To Use LinkedIn To Become Known As The Go-To Expert

I was recently asked to be a guest on the Business Building Rockstars Podcast with Nicole Holland.

How did I create this opportunity?

And more importantly, how can you use LinkedIn to create similar opportunities for yourself so you can become known as the go-to expert in your field?

First, I didn’t leave it to chance…

I started by having a clear focus on how and why I spend my time on LinkedIn.

I wanted to become known as the go-to expert to helping coaches get more clients using LinkedIn.

So everything I posted on LinkedIn had to do with some aspect of this.

In fact, I had started from scratch in February 2015 and in less than 12 months I was able to create a thriving business around this one service alone!

Second, what else is needed in addition to focused branding of yourself?

The biggest challenge I see most coaches face when they try to use LinkedIn to position themselves as the go-to expert in their field is that few of their existing 1st degree connections are people that are relevant to this purpose.

In other words if your target market is everyone, you don’t have a target market.

If we want to become known as the go-to expert in our field we need to be very strategic in building our LinkedIn network.

Simply being a L.I.O.N (LinkedIn Open Networker) does not work very well.

Why? Because you may have 10,000 1st degree connections, but how many of them fit the profile of your target market?

And if you can’t connect with the urgent needs and compelling desires of your one ideal client within your target market nobody is going to pay attention. Your message will just get lost in the sheer volume of marketing messages people see every day.

Conversely, when you strategically use LinkedIn to build a 1st degree network filled with your ideal potential clients and partners in your target market, it becomes much easier to create engagement around your content and to position yourself as the go-to expert in your field.

This is when sales and marketing becomes incredibly EASY and ENJOYABLE because you are able to exponentially spread your message by tapping into the networks of others that serve the same target market as you.

And instead of having to sell yourself or your product:

1) you have enjoyable conversations about your expertise and how you can help make a huge impact in the lives of others; and

2) you begin to show up everywhere. And as you show up in more and more places that your ideal audience “hangs out” you will continue to build your bona fides as the go-to expert in your field.

It’s a virtuous cycle, indeed!

Agree with Nicole! Fantastic piece. A virtuous cycle indeed. Very true: “In other words if your target market is everyone, you don’t have a target market…Conversely, when you strategically use LinkedIn to build a 1st degree network filled with your ideal potential clients and partners in your target market, it becomes much easier to create engagement around your content and to position yourself as the go-to expert in your field.”
